What it is, what it costs, which school accounts it connects to, and what it does with your data.

matcha is a free study planner for students aged 13 and over. It imports assignments from StudentVUE, reads your Google Calendar to see what is already booked, and places study sessions in the time that is left. Both connections are read-only, and the plan rebuilds itself whenever your week changes.

Common questions

What is matcha?

matcha is a free study planner for students. It imports your assignments from StudentVUE, reads the commitments already on your Google Calendar, and places study sessions in the time you actually have left — then rebuilds the plan when something changes.

How much does matcha cost?

matcha is free. There is no paid tier, no trial that expires, and no card required to sign up.

Who is matcha for?

Students aged 13 and over, at schools that use StudentVUE. It is built for the case where the work is known and the time is not: a student with assignments in a gradebook, practice or a shift most evenings, and no clear answer to what to do tonight.

How does matcha decide when you study?

It starts from your fixed commitments — classes, practice, work, anything on your calendar — and finds the gaps between them. Then it fits each assignment into those gaps, sized by how long that kind of work has actually taken you before rather than by an estimate you typed. Sessions are spread across days where they can be, and pushed together only when a deadline leaves no room.

Does matcha use AI to build the plan?

Only for reading, not for scheduling. A language model turns what you type or import into tasks and events — pulling "essay due Thursday, maybe two hours" apart into a due date and a duration. The scheduling itself is ordinary code with no model in it, which is why the same inputs always produce the same plan and why a session never lands in the middle of your shift.

Does matcha work with StudentVUE?

Yes. Connect your district account and matcha pulls your assignments and due dates across, then plans around them. The connection is read-only — matcha never writes anything back to your school account, so nothing your teachers or parents see changes.

Does StudentVUE stay up to date on its own?

Not yet. Connecting syncs your gradebook immediately, and after that you press Sync on the StudentVUE connection in your profile to pull anything new, which re-plans around it. Background syncing is not built.

Does matcha work with Canvas?

Yes. You create an access token in Canvas — Account, then Settings, then New Access Token — and paste it into matcha with your school’s Canvas address. matcha then pulls your active courses, their assignments and your course grades, and plans around them. It only reads; it never writes anything back to Canvas. Canvas imports when you press Sync; it does not refresh on its own yet.

Does matcha connect to Google Calendar?

Yes, and it only reads. matcha requests a single read-only scope so it can see the events already on your calendar and plan around them. It does not create, edit, or delete anything there, which also means your study sessions live in matcha rather than appearing in Google Calendar.

What happens when you fall behind?

The plan is rebuilt rather than left to rot. Anything you did not finish is still open work, so the next plan places it again in the time that is genuinely left, and everything after it moves to make room. Work that no longer fits before its deadline stays open on your list rather than being scheduled into time you do not have.

Is your StudentVUE password safe?

Your district credentials are encrypted before they are stored and are used only to fetch your own gradebook. matcha checks that the district address you give it is a real Edupoint host before sending anything, so a mistyped or spoofed address fails instead of sending your password somewhere else. Disconnecting StudentVUE removes the stored credentials.

How old do you have to be to use matcha?

Thirteen. matcha asks for your birth month and year at sign-up and does not create accounts below that age. Neither value is stored — the screen asks, acts on the answer, and forgets it, because keeping a child’s date of birth on file would create the exact exposure the check exists to reduce.

Can you delete your account and your data?

Yes, from your account settings, at any time. Deleting the account removes your assignments, events, plans and connected-account credentials. You can also disconnect StudentVUE or Google on their own without deleting anything else.

Do you need to install anything?

No. matcha runs in a browser on a phone or a laptop, so there is nothing to download and nothing to keep updated.

How is matcha different from a to-do list?

A to-do list tells you what is outstanding. matcha tells you when to do it. Nine open assignments in a list is nine decisions left for you to make, usually late and usually tired; matcha makes those decisions in advance against the time you really have, and remakes them whenever the week changes.

Still deciding?

If the question is whether a planner is worth it at all rather than whether matcha is, what an AI study planner does covers the category and where it fails. If you already use something else, the comparisons set matcha against Google Calendar, Notion and Todoist without pretending those tools are bad at what they are for.
